Generation No. 1

1. JOSEPH S.1 STURGIS was born September 17, 1836 in Marion County, Ohio, and died November 08, 1919 in Roger Mills County, Oklahoma. He married MARY ANN SHENEMAN April 12, 1860 in Menard County, Illinois, daughter of ADAM SHENEMAN and SUSANNA BAKER. She was born December 26, 1841, and died January 03, 1903 in Davies County, Missouri.

Notes for JOSEPH S. STURGIS:

Joseph was born 9/17/1836 in Marion County Ohio according to pension papers he filed and signed himself. Some time before 1860 he moved to Illinois, probably with his family. Have not been able to identify this family so can not be sure. Joseph appears in the 1860 Illinois census in Menard County.

He was married to Mary Ann SHENEMAN 4/12/1860 in Menard County by a Rev. Underwood. In 2/4/1865. He joined the Illinois military in Co "A" of the 152nd infantry. He was discharged in Memphis Tennessee on 9/11/1865 at the rank of Sergeant.

His son Lou was born 5/29/1877 in Monticello, Piatt County according to his daughter Lena. Piatt county is 60 to 100 miles east of Menard county. There seems to be some movement around the area.

The Family Search web site has him born in E. St. Louis, St. Clair County? Could be bad info.

In 1882 he and his family moved to Missouri and settled in Daviess County. I assume that it was in the area of Pattonsburg because that is where his son William Sherman lived most of his life.

In 5/26/1890 he applied for a military pension and at that time his listed his address as Santa Rosa, Dekalb County which is about 10 miles southwest of Pattonsburg.

Mary Ann died in Daviess County 1/4/1903 and is buried there. After the death of his wife, Joseph moved to Oklahoma apparently to be with his children who seem to have moved there previously. His son Lou was married in 1906 in Roger Mills County.  A Joseph Sturgis received a land patent in Roger Mills County 1-24-1910

Joseph died 11/8/1919 in Roger Mills County, Oklahoma. At the time of his death he was living with his daughter Nella Moore (age 44) and he was buried in Union Center Cemetery which is 8 miles west of Leedey, Oklahoma. This from info on papers from family, However there is a Joseph Sturgis buried in the Red Star Cemetery which is 15 miles East of Roll, Oklahoma with no dates. 5. LOU MELVIN2 STURGIS (JOSEPH S.1) was born May 29, 1877 in Montecello, Piatt County, Illinois, and died April 15, 1960 in Sacramento, California. Notes for LOU MELVIN STURGIS:

When Lou left Oklahoma and moved to Corning, California he settled on a 35 acre farm four miles southwest of town.

After moving to Corning from Oklahoma, Lou worked for the Southern Pacific railroad as a construction Foreman building bridges and Trestle. He was away from home a lot, but a devoted father and husband when home.

In about 1953 he and his wife moved to North Sacramento and lived on Perktell Ave which was near the Nazarene Church, which they both attended .

When "Annie" his wife got sick with the cancer, they went to stay with his daughter, Lena, who was married to Herbert Brown, in Lodi, California. This is where she died in 1953.

The house on Perktell was sold and Lou Lived with his youngest daughter, Irene and her husband Hollis in Sacramento, California.

Being from the "old school" he would trim his toenails with a knife. This resulted in him having an ingrown toe nail which became infected. Left unattended for a period of time, the condition became serious and he had to have his leg amputated. The shock and strain was to much and he died in the Sacramento County Hospital.

In pension forms filled by Joseph S. Sturgis, Lou's father he lists his children and has Lou named as Lewis Melvin. Possible that he just went by Lou as a formal name in lieu of Lewis.
